All training is designed or adapted to suit the needs of organisations, there are no off the shelf courses. Below are examples of some typical training courses.

Building performing teams

This one day course is for anyone who is responsible for managing and motivating people who work in teams.

On this course you will learn:
- What constitutes a team.
- The foundations for a sound team.
- Keeping teams focused and motivated.
- Other working structures that can help you achieve your objectives.

You will be given assistance in drawing up a specification for your ideal team and identifying what action is needed to make it happen.

Using a counselling approach, part one

Aims
To equip care and support workers to help clients through applying the basic skills associated with counselling.

Objectives
- To compare counselling skills with other skills such as advice giving.
- To identify and practice ‘active listening’ techniques.
- To develop empathy skills.
- To find ways of looking after yourself.
- To consider boundaries to one’s practice and strategies for referring on.

This introductory course is aimed at people who are engaged in helping others and who want to improve their ability to be helpful. The course will contain some counselling theory but will largely be based on participants doing practical exercises in using a counselling approach. A work book will be provided. The course will be covered over two full days or six evening sessions, two hours per session.

You will gain by developing your listening skills and learning how to work with people to support them and enable them to maintain control over their own lives. It will help you work alongside clients without feeling compelled to intervene.

Using a counselling approach, part one

Aims
To build on the skills developed in Part One by helping clients to clarify their problems and identify ways of tackling them.

Objectives
- To explore how and to what extent a counselling approach can help people deal with their worries.
- To apply a model of helping which helps clients EXPLORE their situation, gain NEW UNDERSTANDING and to TAKE ACTION.
- To practice giving and receiving feedback.
- To use probes, challenges and questions effectively.
- To identify boundaries in working relationships and ways of working within them.

This two day course builds on the skills developed in Part One, priority will be given to participants who have completed Part One. This course will contain more theory but will also be highly participative.

You will identify the areas you can be effective in when working with clients and when, how and where to refer people on. You will have the opportunity to consider when the helper is actually getting in the way of the client making progress and discover ways of helping the clients to help themselves.

Inter-personal skills for first line managers and supervisors.

In managing people first line managers are responsible for ensuring day-to-day communications are clearly conveyed and understood. They often have to deal with difficult issues such as disciplinary procedures and giving staff support in a time of crisis.

This one-day course will enable you to develop your listening and responding skills to help you make more effective use of day to day relations with staff. You will identify the boundaries and limitations to your involvement as a manager and look at how to help your staff to help themselves. Course content includes: The skills of effective communication, giving feedback. negotiation skills using assertiveness, feedback and effective communications to help others resolve their conflicts

This learning programme will be focused by the staff team and will thus concentrate on the skills which apply to specific situations in their own line of work.

Working with groups - an introduction to group dynamics

Work with vulnerable people often happens in group settings yet those charged with organising groups seldom receive any specific training in group dynamics. Thus one can be faced with a number of difficulties and dilemmas in working with groups and feel unable to determine the most appropriate ways to respond or intervene.

On this three-day course you will identify the characteristics that make a group and develop awareness and understanding of the meaning of individual and group needs, behaviour and interaction. Based on developing a knowledge of what is happening in the group you will be encouraged to help your group build on their identity, values and goals in order to work more effectively as a group.

The material is also applicable to a range of group setting such as community groups, support and self-help, activity groups, teams, social groups etc.

Course content includes:
- Stages in group development.
- Group dynamics.
- The role of the group leader.
- Tools and techniques for facilitating groups.
- Working with difficult situations in groups.
- Valuing equality and diversity.

Valuing Equality and Diversity

This one-day course has been designed to bring staff together to consider the organisation’s values relating to equality and diversity in recruitment, in staff development and in the delivery of the organisations services to its customers and stakeholders. It will be an opportunity to look at what valuing equality and diversity means in practice and to develop individual and departmental commitment plans to ensure the values statement is working.

On the course you will:
- Increase your understanding of how discrimination can happen.
- Recognise discriminatory treatment and its consequences.
- Increase your knowledge of current legislation and your organisation’s policies.
- Apply your understanding to dealing with prejudice and discrimination.

Course content includes:
- The use and abuse of power, prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, dominance, bullying.
- Managing diversity and mainstreaming equalities work.
- The protections and practice
- Equal opportunities legislation, organisational polices and good practice.
- Applying the guidelines – drawing up commitment plans.
- Monitoring and evaluating equalities.

The course has been designed to encourage open discussion in a safe and friendly environment. You will be encouraged to bring your own expertise and experiences together with input and support from the facilitator. We hope by the end of the session you will have a better understanding of diversity and feel more confident in dealing with equality issues.

Facilitating learning

On this two-day course you will develop your skills in providing learning opportunities for staff and volunteers.

Course content includes:
- How adults learn.
- Negotiating and planning learning opportunities.
- Learning in groups.
- Laying the foundations for a productive learning.
- Tools and techniques to use to maintain attention and promote learning.
- Coaching, mentoring and encouraging ongoing learning.

By the end of the course you will have put together a learning programme specific to your area of training.

How do you measure a smile?

This one-day course will introduce you to the principles of monitoring and evaluation and to a range of tools that will enable you to routinely self evaluate the effectiveness and the quality of service you provide.

By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Identify the aim of evaluation and the positive benefits it can provide for the organisation.
- Confidently work through the process of evaluation.
- Understand a range of sources evaluation evidence.
- Begin to identify the various INDICATORS, both qualitative and quantitative which show progress and help measure change.
- Use evaluation information to set objectives, inform decisions and facilitate effective planning.

Making quality applications for funding

This one-day course will introduce you to the process of applying for funding. It is particularly aimed at small voluntary organisations who are looking for one off grants and short term funding.

The course will cover:
- Conveying clear aims and objectives.
- Setting measurable outcomes and results.
- How to develop a funding strategy.
- Working out budgets.
- Funders needs.
- The key aspects of fundable projects.
- Answering common questions.

Learning methods include presentation by the trainer, small group work, working with sample questions, discussion and questions.

Managing in a changing environment

This one-day course will introduce managers and co-ordinators to a range of skills and tools for managing change.

During the course you will develop your understanding of:
- Phases of change and the change cycle.
- Timescales, planning and priorities.
- The role of the manager.
- The importance of planned communications.
- Change and the individual.
- Creating a climate conducive to change.

Managing with your management committee

This one day course is specifically designed for managers and co-ordinators of voluntary organisations. The course will focus on clarifying the responsibilities involved in managing a voluntary organisation and defining roles to provide for an effective partnership between staff, volunteers and committee.

Course content includes:
- Constitutions and charitable status.
- The legal responsibilities of voluntary management committees.
- The functions of office bearers.
- That makes an effective committee.
- Effective line management.
- Maintaining the partnership between staff and committee.

You will be provided with an Outline Manual of Good Practice which is designed to be tailored to your own organisation to provide for ongoing good practice and the induction of new committee members.

Organisational development and planning

A clear plan is  essential if an organisation is to work to its objectives and demonstrate the outcomes of its efforts. Formal planning can give your organisation the edge when it comes to applying for funding.

This two day course that will introduce you to the planning cycle and give you the tools for developing your own:
- Business plan.
- Development plan.
- Strategic plan.
- Work plans.
- Funding strategy.

You will be taken through the stages to enable you to produce, in co-operation with your staff, committee and
customers, the various  plans you need to develop your organisation. STEGO can facilitate your committee and staff in building your organisation’s development plan.

Providing information and support over the phone

This course has been specifically designed for telephone help-lines. It is aimed at developing existing skills and experience in supporting people over the phone.

The one-day learning programme will cover:
- Developing a counselling approach.
- Managing information.
- Legal aspects – data protection and equal opportunities.
- Working within the boundaries.
- Practising the skills.
- Managing and monitoring calls.
- Looking after yourself.

Making the most of supervision

The aim of this course of study is to equip participants to act as supervisors to staff and to make more active use of the supervision they themselves receive.

The course will cover:
- The meaning, purpose and function of supervision.
- Different models and systems for supervision.
- Drawing up supervision contracts.
- Styles of supervision.
- Problems that may arise in supervision.

The preferred way of working through his programme would be to have an introductory day followed by a period of practice involving producing written plans, reports and contracts. A half-day would then bring participants together around the issues which have arisen during practice.

Managing volunteers effectively

This two-day course will build on your understanding of the management issues involved in engaging and retaining volunteers to ensure that volunteers are recruited and managed in line with best practice.

The course will cover:
- The relationship between the volunteer and the organisation.
- Creating a framework for engaging and managing volunteers on which to build your recruitment practices.
- Attracting, involving and retaining volunteers
- Forming a volunteer policy.
- The functions and tasks of management in relation to working with volunteers.
- Providing support for volunteers at different stages of their work with the organisation.
- Good practice and legal issues in relation to volunteers.
